In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, child support obligations are determined according to a calculation that includes income from both parents and may include additional factors such as number of children and who is responsible for providing health insurance.

In many divorces, the noncustodial parent agrees to pay, or is ordered to pay, a certain amount of expenses beyond child support. This may include extracurricular activities, special health care costs, education costs for a special school, as well and social activities and sports. Receipt of child support cannot be used as a criterion to allow or deny parenting time.
